Amazon Chief Sustainability Officer Kara Hurst welcomed participants to the Salon, sharing that it was designed for signatories to experience the full value of The Climate Pledge and drive change through in-person collaboration. The Pledge now has more than 640 signatories from 49 countries and 61 industries including manufacturing, energy production, farming, fashion, entertainment, and pharmaceuticals.
They’re innovating and scaling solutions through joint action projects. Kiesha Clayton, The Climate Pledge’s senior manager of recruitment and engagement, provided an overview of the Pledge’s 23 current join action projects that involve more than 110 signatory companies. Clayton encouraged any signatories who aren’t yet participating in joint action projects to learn more about the ongoing initiatives and get in touch if anything piques their interest.
Since no one business can achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 alone, Clayton said, “we are working across sectors to aggregate demand, incentivize innovation, and deliver real decarbonization benefits.”
Paolo Verzone, a National Geographic Explorer whose photography is supported by The Global Storytellers Fund, a partnership between The Climate Pledge and National Geographic Society, discussed his project documenting the global scientific effort to develop nuclear fusion—an energy source that replicates the same process powering the sun—that could one day unlock a virtually limitless source of emissions-free energy.
Participants also learned about the Pledge’s Electrifying Drayage Alliance, a joint action project to decarbonize the short-distance movement of freight between ports and warehouses.
