Amazon was a founding partner in the US Department of Energy Commercial Heat Pump Accelerator program, launched in 2024. Phase 2 of the Advanced Rooftop Unit (ARTU) program launched in November 2025 and could include development of a specification for next-generation RTU’s, an incubator for new technologies, and an X-prize competition. The goal is to accelerate time to market for advanced heat pump technologies – including lower-carbon source materials, comprehensive life cycle carbon data, ultra-low-GWP refrigerants or solid-state technology, and integrated controls. Amazon, Pledge signatories, and suppliers will collaborate to accelerate innovation, pilot new technologies, and support commercialization.
