In rapidly urbanizing cities across India, commercial freight vehicles are increasingly present on highways as companies deliver goods from ports to distribution centers in cities. Through Laneshift, a freight-electrification initiative led by The Climate Pledge and C40 Cities, the road route between Chennai and Bengaluru can be driven by zero tailpipe emission trucks. In collaboration with public and private sector stakeholders, Laneshift-India is demonstrating the economic and operational viability of long-distance electric freight trucks. From October 2024 to March 2025, Laneshift-India is transporting commercial goods more than 350 kilometers through the Chennai-Bengaluru corridor with EV trucks. The data from this demonstration project aims to combat concerns around range anxiety, EVs’ time to market, and the economics of investing in EV trucking in India now. In the long-term, Laneshift-India's goal is to scale-up EV highways across India to help reduce tail-pipe carbon emissions, improve air quality, and demonstrate that EV trucking is a bankable net-zero path for companies to take.
